The Professionalization of Innovation Management: Evolution and Implications

Just over two decades ago, in a Perspective article the Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM), Tomkovick and Miller, called for professionalization new product development (NPD). Professionalization innovation management (as broader function which NPD is embedded) was posited to require combination scientific knowledge coupled with specific expertise. We revisit that call (1) assess whether has established itself as formal, professional similar human resources or marketing, (2) critically discuss (and if so, how) impacts both academic research practice field. suggest four tests hallmarks profession apply them emerging field management. Based on our findings, we propose set actions academics practitioners. also recommend directions future promote discussion this topic within JPIM community.
